The Miss Nebraska Teen USA Pageant is now taking registration for their fall pageant.  Entrants must be single.  They must be a U.S. citizen, and at least a six-month resident of Nebraska.  The entrants also must be at least 15 years of age and under 19 years of age to qualify.  See Mr. Beard in Room 212 for more details.  Deadline:  June 3.

 

UNL is offering a Wildlife Field Biologist Job Shadowing experience this summer.  Students can sign up for 1 to 5 days of job shadowing.   You will work closely with trained wildlife field biologists and learn about endangered bird management.  Must be 16 years old by June 15, 2004.  There are also volunteer opportunities.   See Mr. Beard in Room 212 for more information.  Deadline:  May 27.

 

JUNIORS:  Do you want to learn about government and the criminal justice system?  Do you strive to uphold the ideals of your community?  If so, you might want to apply to be on the Attorney General¹s Youth Advisory Council (AGYAC).  There will be a fall conference which will be a daylong event that features tours of the State Capitol and Penitentiary, discussion forums with some of Nebraska¹s top elected officials, and lunch at the Governor¹s Mansion.  You would serve on the AGYAC during your senior year.  See Mr. Beard in Room 212 for applications.  Deadline:  May 25

 

³Anytown² is a nationally acclaimed human relations leadership program that brings 60 midlands high school student delegates to participate in a five-night, six-day residential workshop that closely examines all forms of bias, prejudice and discrimination.  Students are selected for their leadership potential and diversity and must currently be in grades 9, 10, and 11.  The program will be held in Ashland, Nebraska from July 4-9.  Cost is $285 and there are scholarships available.  Transportation is included.  See Mr. Beard in Room 212 for more details.  Deadline:  June 3.

 

The Youth Leadership Academy (YLA) is made up of four-day long, hands-on, interactive workshops focusing on leadership training in communication and facilitation, ethics, diversity, team building and collaboration.  Participants must complete all four workshops (on non-school days) and a class-initiated service project to graduate from the Academy.  Everything is free.  Get applications from Mr. Beard in Room 212.  Deadline: May 27.

 

JUNIORS/SENIORS:  AMTRAK has a ³Buy One Ticket, Get One Free!² promotion for you and your parents to make campus visits.  Tickets must be booked 7 days in advance.  Go to www.campusvisit.com/amtrak and fill out a short form or see Mr. Beard in Room 212 for more details.

 

SOPHOMORES:  UNMC will be holding a Summer Health Professions Career Workshop from August 3-6.  This workshop is designed to give students the opportunity to investigate different health careers through a hands-on learning program.  Must have a minimum GPA of 3.0.  The cost of the program is $250.  See Mr. Beard in Room 212 for more details.  Deadline:  June 1.

 

JUNIORS:  Are you interested in the issues facing the Black community?  Would you like to improve your leadership and communication skills?  If yes, you should consider attending Colorado State University¹s Black Issues Forum, which will be held from June 3 to July 2.  Please check with Mr. Beard in Room 212 for details.  Deadline:  June 3.

JUNIORS:  Need to get some Citizenship Issues community service hours out of the way this summer?  Consider being a day camp staff member for the Cornhusker Council Outdoor Education Center.  You pick the days and if you would like to work mornings or afternoons.  If you stay all day, they will feed you.  You will get to run fun activities for children, like outdoor games, crafts, hiking, skits, campfires, and other activities.  See Mr. Beard in Room 212 for more details.

 

JUNIORS & SENIORS:  Interested in Nuclear Engineering?  You might want to attend the University of Missouri-Rolla Nuclear Engineering Summer camps in July (10-15 and 17-22).  In these one-week camps, students will have the opportunity to learn that a future in nuclear engineering means being involved in cutting edge and diverse areas encompassing national security, energy independence, medicine, space nuclear power, and industrial applications.  All educational fees, boarding, and lodging expenses are FREE.  There is a refundable $50 application fee.  See Mr. Beard in Room 212 for more details. 

 

Iowa Western Community College (Council Bluffs) is holding a College Visit Day on Friday, November 12 from 8:30-2:30.   Students will learn more about college, the admissions process, financing a college education, and getting involved with campus activities.  A buffet style lunch will cost $5.00.  See Mr. Beard about the registration process.  Deadline: November 1.

 

Males:  You must register with the Selective Service when you turn 18.  You can register early when you are 17 years and 3 months old.  Register at www.sss.gov or you can pick up a Selective Service registration card at any post office.  See Mr. Beard in Room 212 if you have questions.
