The 2021-2022 REQUIRED athletic & activity paperwork is available to fill out online!

The Nebraska School Activities Association requires each student (Grades 9-12) who participates in any of the NSAA sanctioned Athletic or Activity program to annually have a Parent and Student Consent Record completed and on file. Those students intending to participate in a sport, cheer or dance here at Northeast must also have a Physical Examination completed after May 1st, 2021 for the upcoming/current school year on file. A physical is not required for Speech, Debate and Play Production participants.

You should wait to begin the electronic packet until you have the physical form to upload. If you already did the online parent consent (Step 3), you can e-mail the physical to ctyrrel@lps.org, or bring in a hard copy.

The Athletic and Activities Packet includes all the information and necessary forms for your review and those that must be completed. The Athletic and Activities Packet and its requirements are also required by Lincoln Public Schools for participation in cheer and dance activities. You can pick up a hard copy of the packet or access all the information online at step 2. You can read it from there – no need to print it off.

To complete this process electronically on the LPS Athletics website. You will also be able to upload a clear picture of your physical form that is dated on or after May 1st, 2021 (taking a picture with your cell phone will also work to upload as long as it is clear enough to read).

If students are getting an error message that they do not have permission to access the student consent portion (Step 4) of the online packet, it’s likely because they are using the same device as their parents. In this case, students should log in to their Chromebook with Google Chrome as their browser using their 6 digit LPS account, xxxxxx@class.lps.org or they can use their smart phone to complete Step 4.

If you are unable to complete this process electronically, please download and print the participation packet, or pick a packet up in the athletic/activities office, then fill it out and return it to the Northeast athletics/activities office.
An Athletic & Activities Packet must be completed for each student who will be participating in a sport or activity here at Northeast BEFORE they are allowed to try out for a team.

Who would have thought a year ago we would still be in the COVID crisis, but here we are competing in athletics/activities with fans. This has been an interesting year to say the least. Our winter teams are competing and having tremendous success: B/G basketball, swimming, wrestling. Our Rockets both coaches and athletes are competing at a high level. There is so much excitement and as we enter the final month of regular season events athletes and coaches are preparing for the postseason. This will be an exciting next few weeks, and I sincerely hope you all can come out and watch these great students/athletes who have devoted so much of their time.

As we approach the end of the winter season, spring sports will soon begin. Please make sure if you are a new athlete for the spring season to go to the LPS website and fill out the necessary forms to be able to compete. All athletes are required to have a current physical on file and a consent form as well. If you have questions please contact the Athletic Office. The first official day of spring practices is set for February 28th, 2022.

I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate all of our Rocket athletes who have earned the right to sign with a college in athletics. It is an extremely exciting time for all involved and knowing how much time our athletes have contributed to making this happen, it is all well deserved. Please check out our Twitter account where we have posted several signings or both the Lincoln Journal Star and Omaha World Herald the week of January 31st.

I would like to comment on just how fantastic it has been in year two at Lincoln Northeast. I have encountered so many gracious and helpful individuals who have a true passion for making a difference and helping our Rockets succeed. It is truly a breath of fresh air knowing that I can work with people who are reasonable and willing to achieve our ultimate goal of making the high school experience a great one for our students/children. As you know communication is the key to making things productive, and I know that coaches and our office appreciate when you as parents or patrons talk potential issues out with us. This only makes for a more positive experience for everyone involved. I put so much value into the face to face conversation. It allows for us all to gain a true perspective of what the level of concern might be. Again, I appreciate your willingness to communicate with coaches and our office in making Lincoln Northeast the best place to be!

Wishing everyone a fantastic and successful spring and GO ROCKETS!

Matt Uher, Athletic & Activities Director
muher@lps.org

Spring is just around the corner. That signals a new season for Rocket athletics and activities. Winter has been great and is far from being over. It has been wonderful to see people in the stands again and teams competing in front of their peers. Our student body has been out for many events and made a positive difference. As we move closer to the end of the winter seasons we are extremely proud of the effort by all of our groups. Northeast has created some excitement in Class A, so it will be interesting to watch and see how it unfolds down the stretch.

I wish all of our groups well. As I said earlier, the spring seasons are not far off and you can feel the energy of students wanting to get back outside as the change to warmer weather gets nearer.

This school year has moved fast; yet the memories will last a lifetime. Again, thank you to all that made it possible. We are proud of you for representing the pride and tradition of being a “Rocket”.

Athletic Training Table

Just a reminder, if any students want to apply to become an athletic training student aid, applications are in the athletic training room. Spring sports are around the corner. Keep the athletes moving! The most common injury we hear of in the spring is shin splints. Shin issues can be very painful especially during a lot of running activities, so it is important to get ahead of the pain. If you are someone that gets shin splints a lot, consider doing the following to improve your shins and overall athletic ability: standing calf stretches, heel raises, sitting toe raises, and standing toe raises. Do 3 sets of 15 repetitions every day. A massage with an ice cup is a great way to relieve some of the pain if you already have them. Feel free to come see us in the athletic training room with any aches or pains during your season or off season to help keep the injuries away.

The offseason football program is in full swing. We need to see all athletes not in a winter or spring sport in the weight room Monday, Wednesday, & Thursday!

Congratulations to all the athletes who are competing in winter sports and keep getting better. We also want to encourage all football players to participate and compete in a spring sport. Be on the lookout for upcoming spring and summer camps! It is a great day to be a Rocket!

As always, current players are still welcome to utilize the weight room for spring conditioning after school.

Mark your calendar:

Volleyball

It won’t be long before warmer weather is upon us (hopefully) and we start looking ahead to spring and summer activities to get us geared up for the 2022 Volleyball Season!

Weight training/agilities, open gyms, and spring player/parents meetings are all activities that we are currently in the process of planning for the spring and summer months. As dates are set, Coach Songster will be sending out emails to all returning players and those 8th grade families that have asked to be added to our contact list. Our summer camp will be held in early June with more summer league and camp options to follow. We urge our volleyball athletes to take advantage of spring sport activities (track, soccer, tennis) and improve themselves athletically and be multi-sport athletes! Try something new and get outside your comfort zone!

If you are not already on Coach Songster’s email list and would like to be added on, please contact Coach Songster in order to start getting information on upcoming spring and summer VB activities.

Unified Bowling

We are looking forward to starting another amazing season of Unified Bowling next October after a very exciting last season in which we earned District Runner-up! I was so proud of them. I have never seen a group of athletes work so hard and have so much fun.

This is a team made up of Special Education students and General Education students.

Students interested in joining the team next fall will need to have their participation packet completed before beginning the season which starts in October.

In addition to being a part of a great team and opening up social circles in the school, students participating can use the season for community service hours for their Government and Politics classes.

You can get a head start and get your participation packet completed over the summer if you’d like. If you do not have internet access to do it online, you can pick up a packet after May 1st and return it to the athletic department.

Check the local bowling alleys for cheap rates this summer and get some practice in and be ready for next fall.

If you have any questions please just email me. Im happy to help in any way and look forward to hearing from you.

Debate

LNE currently does not have a Debate program. We would like to get it started again, and are looking for students who enjoy logic and philosophy, and enjoy engaging in competitive debates against students from all over the Midwest.

Regular practice would occur 2-3 times a week. The season begins in November and lasts through the end of March. Contact the Activities Office, Room 171, if you would be interested in participating next year.

Baseball

The baseball program has been busy with off-season lifting, conditioning, and hitting sessions. We are working hard on a throwing program through Driveline to improve durability and velocity with our pitchers. Tryouts for this season begin February 28th and we are eager to get started.

Northeast baseball has the best facilities, indoor and outdoor, in the city, these facilities benefit our players tremendously. We have recently purchased more technology and equipment to help develop our players.

The dates for our annual youth clinic for students in grades 3-8 will be announced soon. Please contact me with any questions.

Pending weather, we will either be at Mahoney Golf Course or at Northeast hitting in the west gym. Please stay tuned and listen to the announcements. We will be getting out to the course as much as possible as weather permits throughout the first couple weeks. We’re forward to a great season, and good luck to the rest of the spring sports!

Please take note of the following items as we prepare for our season.

  2. PRE-SEASON CONDITIONING: Open Gym Times – 6:00-7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday in the LNE West Gym. Enter through door 17.
  3. ATTENDANCE: I am emailed daily about attendance. There should be no reason that you are marked TRUANT.
  4. TRYOUTS: We will have tryouts the week of February 28th. Please email me at jhidalgo@lps.org so I can add you to our email distribution list in order to send out additional information throughout the season.

Head Coach Jose Hidalgo
jhidalgo@lps.org

Girl's Tennis

During the fall and winter months, I encouraged all girls interested in playing tennis in the spring to get out there with their rackets and play as much tennis as possible when the weather cooperates. We had some beautiful late fall/early winter days and I hope some of them were used. However, with COVID protocols we have not been able do any indoor tennis time. It’s been a different offseason for everyone.

But now is the time for the season to get underway and I cannot be more excited. The year has been long, but I am very excited to see the new team and truly get to know them, and play our season this time around. It should be a fun year.

Now, as the season gets underway, it is important that we remain motivated for the season, both on the court and off. The more mentally prepared we are — with our school work and practice work — the more successful we can be as a program moving forward. I am looking forward to the season.

Go Rockets!

Journalism

Hi everyone! The yearbook staff is working hard on the yearbook – and it’s looking great!

Updates and deadlines: The senior photo deadline is coming soon! Seniors can submit their senior photos at jump code GYPL by October 31st. Parents and friends can purchase a senior ad at jump code RYY2, and this year’s book can also be purchased there. If you missed picking up or purchasing a yearbook from a past year, you can pick them up or purchase one by coming to room 132 or emailing moquist@lps.org. If you’ve taken any great photos of LNE students or teams that you’d like to share with the yearbook staff, you can submit photos at jump code BHYR.

Newspaper is taking a break this year, and we are actively recruiting to restart and recreate the LNE Northeastern for the 2022-23 school year. If you’re interested in telling LNE stories and recording memories for each other and the community, talk to your counselor about joining Journalism, Mass Media (Newspaper), PhotoJ and/or Yearbook. In the meantime, you can check out the past newspaper website at jump code YFBY (sign up specifically for Mass Media if you want to help recreate it!).

Lincoln Northeast Athletic Hall of Fame

The Hall of Fame resumed their meetings beginning November 9. They had not met in over a year due to COVID.

The executive board will be voting very soon for the 2023 induction class and looking for a date to hold the banquet. Be watching for those details in future newsletters.

The Northeast Athletic Hall of Fame Committee normally meets on the second Tuesday of each month at Greg’s Drive-In at 7:00 p.m.

If you know of someone you feel should be considered for the Athletic Hall of Fame, click on the link at the top of this article and print off a nomination form. The more athletic accomplishments you can provide, the better for helping the committee when casting their votes for future inductees.

Northeast Activities Student Advisory (NASA)

The Northeast Activities Student Advisory has been meeting every other Wednesday. The next meeting will be Wednesday, February 23rd at 7:15-7:45 a.m. in the center gym.

The purpose of the group is to provide positive school support, build leadership skills, respect for each other and our opponents and to change the culture of Northeast to become more inviting, supporting, intentional to be the best we can be and not allow negative behavior at contests.

If you are interested in becoming a member, stop in the Athletic Office and see Mr. Uher.

Athletic Office Information

LNE Participation Packet is now online!

We would like to encourage anyone who has internet access to complete their packet online. If you do not have internet, packets can still be picked up in the Athletic Office or packet forms can be printed off the athletic web page (Step 2 of the Online Packet). Athletes must have their packets completed prior to the first day of spring sports practice which starts on Monday, February 28th (Baseball, Boys’ Golf, Boys’ & Girls’ Soccer, Girls’ Tennis, Boys’ & Girls’ Track).

If you plan to try out for a spring sport, it is a good idea to schedule a physical examination appointment right away and get your packet completed early so you can start the first day of practice. It is best to wait until you have the physical before you do the online packet so you can upload the physical at that time. If you completed the online parent consent (Step 3) before getting the physical exam, then it is best to scan it or take a picture of it with your phone then e-mail it to ctyrrel@lps.org, or you can bring the hard copy to the Athletics & Activities office, room 171. Students must do the student consent (Step 4). It works best if students do their student consent on their chrome book or phone. Students must use their school e-mail (6-digit student number @class.lps.org).

If you do not have your own doctor or if you can’t get an appointment prior to the start of your season, there are urgent care facilities throughout the city that can help.

The Athletic Office is open 7:45 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. weekdays, (402-436-1337). If you cannot do your packet online, please do not turn completed packets in to your coach or slip it under the Athletic Office door if it is locked. If the Athletic Office is closed, you may see Mrs. Munford in the main office for assistance.

We want to be sure all forms have the necessary signatures as well as check for obligations and credits earned the previous semester to determine eligibility. Athletes will not be allowed to begin practice or tryouts unless they have their obligations cleared.

If a student athlete has passed less than 20 credits the previous semester and are an underclassman (9th-11th grade), they must see Mr. Jeff Pierce, our Assistant Athletic & Activities Director for a contract which will allow the athlete to play on a lower level team. No varsity participation will be allowed.

Role of Parents in Athletics

Parents new to Northeast Athletics who have not previously attended the LNE Athletic Department/Role of Parents in Athletics meeting must do so prior to an athlete starting participation in contests. Those who have previously attended this mandatory meeting have met this requirement and do not need to attend further meetings.

There will be no in person Role of Parent meeting for winter or spring sports. View the slideshow, and once you have completed it, go to the Role of Parent Meeting Verification link.

Parents will still be expected to attend individual sports pre-season parents’ meetings conducted by head coaches.
